Improve your Acne with our Dermatology Team in Washington, DC

Chronic acne can be embarrassing to deal with on a regular basis, but it can also cause itchiness, discomfort, and increase your risks for skin infections. Acne can also lead to scarring and make you feel uncomfortable in your own skin. At Braun Dermatology in Washington, DC, we can provide treatment for chronic acne and improve your skin’s appearance.

Common causes of acne

Acne typically develops from clogged pores, and it is most common on your face, chest, back, and shoulders. It can be worsened by excess oils, inflammation, or bacteria on the skin. While it is most common for adolescents, many adults deal with outbreaks regularly. Outbreaks can be triggered by hormone fluctuations or imbalances, excess oil production, poor eating habits, hygiene habits, or stress. Certain medications may cause acne, and your doctor may be able to prescribe an alternative if you are having a reaction.

If you are dealing with acne regularly, often changing the soap or makeup you use can help. Over-the-counter treatments may be helpful for some people, but people dealing with excess sebum production, stress, or hormone fluctuations, may need help from a dermatologist to clear up the issue.

Treating acne

The providers at Braun Dermatology may take a variety of approaches to help you clear acne and minimize outbreaks. We will start with an evaluation of your skin and ask screening questions to help determine the cause of our outbreaks. We may prescribe a retinoid cream or other topical medications to clear up acne and recommend a skincare routine to reduce further outbreaks. Acne may be triggered by certain foods, such as milk products, and an elimination diet might be recommended to find out what triggers your pimples.
