Photodynamic Therapy for the Treatment of Sun-damaged Skin and Actinic Keratoses

The team at Braun Dermatology uses a variety of treatments to address sun damage and precancerous skin lesions. While not the only way to address these problems, we achieve excellent results by using photodynamic therapy (PDT).  This treatment selectively kills damaged cells allowing a “fresh start” for your skin. At Braun Dermatology of Washington, DC, and Alexandria, Virginia, our providers can advise patients if they are candidates for photodynamic therapy and explain the benefits it can provide.

Understanding PDT

Photodynamic therapy treatments begin with the application of a “photosensitizing” agent, which is absorbed by sun damaged and precancerous cells. After allowing for a period of time (typically one to two hours) for the medication to be absorbed into the skin cells, a specialized visible light is used to “activate” the medication which selectively kills the damaged cells.  At Braun Dermatology, we use either a blue light, a red light or an intense pulsed light machine.

What are the benefits of photodynamic therapy?

Significant reduction in actinic keratoses, which are precancerous lesions that appear as pink, rough spots.

Effective at treating wrinkles, lines, and textural changes. While medically it addresses precancers, it also provides a cosmetic “boost” to the skin.

Non-invasive, painless, and safe. There is a feeling of heat/stinging during the treatment and initially appears as though there is a sunburn.  There is typically a week of skin recovery after treatment, during which time there is peeling and redness. There are no reports of scarring or persistent redness following PDT treatments. Sunlight must be avoided for 48 hours following treatment.
