Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Common questions about Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer

Skin cancer is incredibly common — in fact, it is estimated that one in every five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer within their lifetime. At Braun Dermatology, we work closely with Washington, DC, area patients to identify the best treatment option for their specific needs. This may be Mohs micrographic surgery for some patients, a specialized cancer treatment with the highest cure rate. Patients understandably have many questions when considering their treatment options. We are here to help guide you through the decision-making process so you feel confident about your path forward.

What is Mohs surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized skin cancer treatment that removes the cancerous lesion layer by layer until all cancerous cells are removed. It is performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure and should only be performed by fellowship-trained surgeons.

Why would Mohs surgery be recommended for me?

Mohs micrographic surgery can be the best skin cancer treatment option for a variety of different reasons:

  • The cancer is in a spot where it is essential to safeguard the maximum amount of healthy skin due to cosmetic or functional reasons, such as the head or neck, hands, shins, feet or genitals
  • The cancer has returned (recurred) after previous treatment
  • The cancerous lesion is large, does not have clear edges, or is growing rapidly
  • It is an aggressive type of skin cancer

This list is not exhaustive, and Mohs surgery may be recommended for other reasons based on your doctor’s evaluation.

Will it leave a scar?

All skin cancer treatments can leave scars; however, Mohs surgery is the best way to completely remove your skin cancer while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.
