6 options to treat psoriasis symptoms
While there is no cure for psoriasis, Braun Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center is experienced in effectively managing the characteristic scales (plaques), rashes, itching, and other symptoms associated with this skin disease. Here are six treatment options that have helped our patients in the Washington, D.C., and Alexandria, Virginia, areas to regain their comfort and pride in the appearance of their skin.
1 – Emollients
Moisturizing creams, ointments, and lotions keep psoriasis symptoms in check by repairing the skin’s outermost layer/barrier. They also quench dry skin, soften plaques, and relieve itching. Thick, greasy, and creamy products like petroleum jelly are particularly beneficial for thick plaques and provide a long-lasting barrier. To get the most out of these products, apply them to slightly damp skin after bathing or showering to seal in maximum moisture.
2 – OTC exfoliating preparations
These products are “keratolytics,” which means they are formulated to soften the tough keratin protein in the skin. This process breaks down the glue that binds the dead skin cells together, effectively reducing scaly and thick plaques. Skin looks noticeably smoother and more even, and feels softer. For instance, salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acids are peeling agents, while coal tar slows the rapid cell turnover associated with psoriasis to reduce inflammation, scaling, and itching.
3 – Prescription medications
Medicated creams and ointments are often the first line of defense for patients with mild to moderate psoriasis. Applied directly to the skin, commonly-prescribed topical medications include corticosteroids. Patients with mild psoriasis may have great success with hydrocortisone, but more potent versions are available for thick plaques, too. Synthetic forms of vitamin D can work wonders to regulate fast-growing skin cells. These anti-inflammatory medications are often used alongside steroids.

4 – Oral prescription medications
“Traditional” oral medications work systemically or throughout the body to resolve severe or widespread psoriasis symptoms. These medications include methotrexate, which suppresses the immune system to slow down cell turnover. Cyclosporine is a powerful immunosuppressant that works quickly to relieve symptoms; however, due to its potency, long-term use is generally not recommended. These and other medications like them may also be taken as injections or in liquid form.
5 – Biologics
These highly effective, targeted systemic medications may be prescribed for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. They are administered via injection or intravenously. Unlike other systemic treatments that suppress the entire immune system, these advanced medications target specific parts of the immune system. In turn, biologics can block inflammatory processes at their source. These and other drugs that affect your immune system can increase the risk of infection, so it is important for us to discuss such considerations with you when developing a treatment plan to manage your symptoms.
6 – UV Therapy
In some instances, light-based therapies may be appropriate to slow the growth of skin cells and fight inflammation. This approach involves applying controlled doses of ultraviolet light at a specific wavelength to the skin. To achieve significant skin clearing, repeat treatments may be scheduled for several weeks.
