In studies, a single CoolSculpting® treatment trimmed fat by an average of 20% to 25%. You, too, can benefit from this effective, non-invasive “fat freezing” technique at the offices of Braun Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center in Washington, D.C. and Alexandria, Virginia.
The science behind CoolSculpting® was first developed by Harvard University researchers in the late 1990s. These researchers found that small pockets of stubborn fat cells could be selectively frozen and treated without damaging the skin or surrounding tissues. This process, which they coined cryolipolysis, is the basis for CoolSculpting®.
Our providers use special applicators to deliver controlled cooling safely to localized deposits of fat. The fat cells in this targeted area are crystallized, and the surrounding skin and organs are not harmed during treatment.
In the weeks and months following treatment, your body’s lymphatic system will process the frozen or crystallized fat cells. This natural process eventually removes the damaged cells, gradually reducing the size and appearance of “love handles” or “muffin tops,” and other bulges.
CoolSculpting® is FDA-cleared to treat nine different areas of the body. Fat tends to be stored in these areas and is notoriously resistant to fat reduction measures such as targeted exercises. Treatment sites include the submental area underneath the chin, flanks, abdomen, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, back, and buttocks.
Note: CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss treatment for obesity. Good candidates for treatment have localized fat deposits, but should be within 20 pounds of their ideal body weight. You should generally be healthy, with good skin elasticity. It is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.
Treatment is generally very relaxing. You can take a nap, read a book, or check your emails. During your visit, you may feel a sensation of pulling, tugging, pressure, and mild pinching. This occurs as the applicator draws in the tissues at the treatment sites. As the cooling temperatures are delivered to the area, you may experience intense cold, tingling, and cramping. These sensations subside as the area goes numb.
Common side effects include redness, mild bruising, tenderness, and skin sensitivity. These effects are generally well-tolerated. In fact, due to the non-invasive nature of treatment, you can return to your busy schedule and active life immediately – no downtime. The makers of CoolSculpting® report that the most dramatic results occur within one to three months. Improvements continue for up to six months. CoolSculpting® may be a one-and-done treatment, or we can treat areas several times until your desired results are visible. Results can be long-lasting as long as you maintain your overall body mass.
