How we target and eliminate stubborn fat to sculpt your body without surgery!
From our offices in Washington, D.C., and Alexandria, Virginia, Braun Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center provides many alternatives to surgery to enhance the appearance of the face and body. CoolSculpting® is a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction for individuals with stubborn localized fat.
How do you perform body sculpting without surgery?
CoolSculpting® is a procedure that targets and destroys fat. It is based on cryolipolysis, which is how fatty tissue freezes at a higher temperature than water. CoolSculpting® delivers controlled cooling through special applicators to the targeted fat. The treatment site is chilled to a temperature that crystallizes or “freezes” the fat cells. Due to the treatment’s highly precise and targeted nature, only the fat cells are affected. The surrounding skin and organs are not harmed.
What happens to the fat?
Your body’s lymphatic system safely and naturally processes and eliminates the fat cells over time. So, CoolSculpting® sculpts by destroying and getting rid of the fat. This process can reduce localized fat pockets or deposits by 20% to 25%.
What do you mean by localized fat?
You may be a good candidate for CoolSculpting® if you have areas of your face and body that do not budge no matter how nutritiously you eat or how frequently and intensely you exercise. Even individuals at or near a healthy weight and who maintain a healthy lifestyle can have these “zones” or pockets of stubborn fat. Typically, how the fat is distributed comes down to genetics. For this reason, these areas seem to “resist” the obvious, traditional weight loss and fat loss methods – like consuming a low-fat diet and exercising consistently. CoolSculpting® helps you finally overcome the challenges associated with this “non-modifiable” genetic factor responsible for obstinate fat.
Can CoolSculpting® treat all fatty areas?
At the time of this writing, CoolSculpting® is FDA-cleared to treat nine different areas of the face and body. These areas are as follows:
- Under the jawline
- Under the chin (a “double chin”)
- Flanks or “love handles.”
- Abdominal region
- Inner thighs
- Outer thighs
- Upper arms
- Back fat
- Under the buttocks (“banana rolls”)
Of course, we will discuss your unique needs and goals for body sculpting during a consultation.

How long does it take for my fat to go away?
It typically takes around one to three months for the body to eliminate the targeted fat cells. This is when you begin to see results; however, full results usually require around six months or longer. Areas can be safely treated multiple times. Depending on your body’s response to CoolSculpting® and your goals, you may wish to schedule additional treatment sessions.
Is CoolSculpting® permanent?
CoolSculpting® supports sustained results. Once the fat cells are gone, new ones are not produced. However, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Changes in your body weight can affect the results. If you gain weight after treatment, the remaining fat cells in the treated area(s) may enlarge.
We will discuss everything to expect from treatment during a consultation. To schedule your visit, contact the offices of Braun Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center in Washington, D.C. 202-816-7557 or Alexandria, VA 571-449-2555.
